Cycling on Achill Island

The National Cycle Network is being developed throughout Ireland and a number of Cycle Hub towns are located across the country. Achill is described as wild, windy and stunningly beautiful. With numerous historic sites, excellent facilities and activities. The island, which is situated in County Mayo, has a long history of human settlement with megalithic tombs and promontory forts dating back 5,000 years. There's also a 15th century fortified tower house, Kildownet Castle, the 19th century Achill Mission, and the poignant deserted village at Slievemore.

The Achill landscape is also a major draw with postcard perfect blue flag beaches, some of Europe's highest cliffs and large tracts of blanket bog sweeping over the island's two peaks and down to the shore. Cycling along the quiet lanes and trails is a wonderful way to discover the island's interior. There are three routes in Achill, marked and numbered 1,2 & 3 ranging from 10km to 48km.

Loop 1: 44km, 3-5 hours.
Start:  Keel or anywhere along the route!
The longest tour, taking cyclists to the southern corner of Achill Island where they will experience the spectacular sea cliff scenery along the 'Atlantic Drive'. They can visit Kildownet Church Castle once used by Granuaile (The Pirate Queen) and ponder on those who inhabited the early promontory forts. There are some moderate climbs and a steep descent/ascent on this route. Cyclists can pause for some well deserved refreshments in Cashel, Dooega or Achill Sound. There are picnic benches at several points on the route, but the most spectacular is overlooking the bay at Ashleam. There is an option to shortcut the route at Ashleam.

Loop 2: 28 km, 2-3 hours.
Start: Keel
This looped cycle route visits the north east corner of Achill Island with views back to the mainland. You can visit the 'deserted village', the beaches at Dugort and Golden Strand with opportunities for swimming. The route then follows quiet lanes back towards Bunacurry before returning along the main island road (R319). There are several picnic tables en-route.

Loop 3: 12 kilometres, 1-1½ hours
Start: Keel
This route makes for a pleasant short cycle with gentle gradients around Keel. Cyclists can detour to visit the 'deserted village' and a megalithic tomb. Excellent views down to the Atlantic and the main beach - Trawmore.
